It's Christmas!

Updated: Dec 26, 2018

So it's Christmas; works parties, social gatherings, beer, wine, mince pies, chocolate.....diet? um I'll start after Christmas...maybe New Year !

Ok so if you vowed that 2018 would be the year you would get fit and lose weight and it hasn't happened then there is little point starting the week before Christmas because lets face it you aren't going to suddenly start eating salads while everyone else is tucking into festive treats, however that's no excuse to binge, you won't enjoy it you'll feel guilty and bloated and where is the fun in that?!

I always hear people set dates for dieting or changing their lifestyle. Why do diets have to start on a Monday? and if you fall off the wagon Tuesday why do you have to wait until next Monday to get back on it? that's not only 6 wasted days but also 6 days of most likely over eating because you expect to be deprived from next Monday!

I think the time to make a change is now...yes now, 25 seconds after you just ate that chocolate bar, and if you forget and shove a pack of digestive biscuits in your mouth later on then start again right after that ! My point is that what we put off doing...we never do.

If you fall off the wagon jump straight back on, it doesn't matter how many times you fall off provided you ALWAYS jump back on it ! The road is bumpy expect a few falls and scrapes, that's life don't hate yourself for it!

How can you have what you want without excess? -

If you want it have it, but think to yourself do I actually want this? if the answer is yes have it, but do you actually need 3 Yorkshire puddings or will 1 suffice? Eat slowly, savour the tastes and the textures, put your knife and fork down between mouthfuls and generally take your time. When you eat slowly you enjoy your food more you become satiated much quicker. Being satiated means to be satisfied, in our (very fortunate) lives we have been conditioned to clear our plates, how many times were you told as a child to clear your plate or you weren't having pudding? What we were actually being taught there was that we should eat past satisfaction and then eat a little more after that...no wonder we've become a nation with an obesity problem !

So if you're a pudding person try to judge how much room you need to leave to make way for pudding, if you're a savoury person don't feel you need a pudding just to fit in or because you can.

If there is food you really don't enjoy or find no value in then really why are you eating it? I find no joy or value in potatoes (I know many people find that strange but I'm just not a fan) there is no nutritional reason why I need them because I get carbs from other foods, so I just don't eat them as to me they are wasted calories.

Try to think about what your body needs and make your decisions based on that and your taste preferences, stop mindlessly eating foods just because they traditionally 'go with' another food or because you have to clear your plate.

My top tip for Christmas; Have exactly what you want but make sure it's exactly what you need too !

Eating mindfully over Christmas and New Year should help you enjoy your food and festivities much more and without the guilt, it will also set you in good stead for smashing your goals in the new year.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone

Best wishes
